Good Friends

Most definitely as humanity is fast entering into a major transition period, it is time to take stock of our achievements and shortfalls. This blog is intended as one person’s attempt to do so. For those reading what I have to say, thank you for staying with me as I know the subjects to be addressed are many and time will be required to develop all the arguments. Just now and briefly I want to introduce some of the topics to be discussed as I plod my way to various conclusions. I have no doubt this list will change, so please come back periodically to see what has been newly considered.

  1. The future is mired in the past: taking a look through the rear window to see where we have come from, how we got here and the current and future issues we will have to deal with, eventually.

  2. The scars associated with taking and not putting back: humanity is really good at taking, but is pathetic at putting back.

  3. Unlimited growth in a finite world: it is not just about extending our reach into global resources, it is also about recognition of the limits to sinks, real and conceptual.

  4. Avoiding full-cost accounting: not all consequences of our thinking and actions are adequately considered.

  5. Considering values, attitudes and beliefs: in the end these three concepts represent, indeed are the drivers of cultures, society and civilization.

  6. Ignoring risk and plunging into crisis: are we on a lemming treadmill?

  7. Technological fix: methodologies and tools need to be carefully used.

  8. Surrogates rule: monitoring the monitors.

  9. Scale: detail, economies and dis-economies of scale.

  10. Systems and complexity: keeping track of both hands.

  11. The big picture: starting from a different perspective.

As I make progress with this blog, no doubt other subjects will be considered. Just now I detect some urgency for getting the dialogue underway and I am looking forward to posting my opinions. I hope they resonate and help in a small way toward tackling the issues discussed.

Again, thanks for your attention.
